The Billion Dollar Laptop Problem

Stealing a Laptop

Back in 2010, Intel and the Ponemon Institute conducted a study which analyzed the scope and circumstances of missing company laptops at 329 companies.  They concluded that the 86,000 laptops lost to these companies could cost a staggering $2.1 BILLION! This included not only the cost of replacement equipment, but “detection, forensics, data breach, lost intellectual property costs, lost productivity and legal, consulting and regulatory expenses."

Fast-forward to 2024 and, while times have changed, the significant cost of lost IT equipment has not.  In fact, many estimate that the price tag has only grown.  One of the main reasons is the rapid rise of remote workers.  “Lost laptops” now include not only missing or stolen equipment, but also “unreturned” laptops.  Factor in that today’s work-from-home employee may also have desktops, monitors, phones or other IT equipment (which is also often unreturned) and the numbers grow even further.

While there is not much your organization can do about a laptop that is lost or stolen at the airport, you can mitigate the loss of “unreturned” IT equipment.  Using an IT retrieval service, such as MyITRetrieval.com, to streamline and simplify the return can greatly increase the chances of getting your assets back in your possession.
