RTX 5090 Melting Madness: Is NVIDIA’s Power Connector Problem Back?

Brittany Perry

Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 Founders Edition

Numerous recent reports have surfaced regarding melting power connectors on NVIDIA's latest GeForce RTX 5090 Founders Edition graphics cards.  These incidents echo the challenges faced with the previous RTX 4090 series, where the 12VHPWR connectors were prone to overheating and melting.

Investigations suggest that uneven current distribution within the power cables might be a contributing factor. Thermal imaging has revealed that certain wires within the connector are experiencing significantly higher temperatures than others, leading to potential overheating and damage.

NVIDIA had previously addressed similar concerns by introducing the 12V-2×6 connector with the RTX 50 series, aiming to improve reliability.  This updated connector features design enhancements to ensure proper seating and connection.  Despite these improvements, the recent incidents indicate that challenges persist.

As of now, NVIDIA has not issued an official statement regarding these new reports. Users are advised to exercise caution, ensure that all power connectors are fully and securely seated, and monitor their systems for any signs of overheating or unusual behavior.
