For those that do not currently leverage a UPS....It is time.
And thankfully it is straightforward to calculate the UPS capacity you need. Whatever the max total wattage of every device you plan to connect to your new UPS is, multiply this by a factor of 1.25. This should be your starting point.
Example:
Total wattage = 2800w
2800 x 1.25 = 3,500
The UPS minimum capacity you require is 3,500 watts.
Now, most rack-mounted UPS systems will show their VA (Volt Amps) rating and their Wattage rating. But if for some reason they only show VA, just multiply your wattage x 1.1111.
Example
wattage = 3,500w
3,500 x 1.1111 = 3,888VA
Now, typically when you exceed 15,000VA UPS systems (typically the max in a cabinet), they begin to be rated in kVA (kilovolt-amps).
Common units above 15,000VA are 20 kVA, 30 kVA, 50 kVA and so on. Most businesses, if they reach that scale, should work with their technology partner or local Data Center specialist to assist in calculating their needs and do an onsite survey.
