Retailer Operations Costs Soaring!

Updated: Apr 3, 2023

Just like Banks, large brick & mortar retailers across the country have undergone intense pressures over the last decade to reduce store operational expenses, increase store hours of operation, and deliver a more efficient and effective customer experience.

Most of the public sees these things take shape in the front of house - New POS systems, mobile scanners for checkout, self-serve kiosks, and more.

But behind the scenes, retailers are doing some amazing things to attempt to manage store efficiencies while also lowering overall cost of operations. Much of this occurs on the backend of the store technology infrastructure. From security camera infrastructure doubling as customer monitoring for product placement (Target) to, you guessed it, infrastructure deployment services.

Here are a few things we see retailers working on today:

  1. IT Inventory Management: solutions to better manage their technology inventory, including tracking of inventory levels, product information, and purchase orders.

  2. Staging and Deployment: proper staging and deployment services to ensure that technology products are ready for deployment and subsequent use at the store location. This includes product setup, configuration, and testing. All to ensure seamless use when installed onsite.

  3. Asset Tracking: Software to assist in asset tracking services to help retailers track their technology assets, including their location, condition, lifespan, and planned refresh date.

  4. Lower Total Ownerhip Costs: Developing a pre-determined Lifecycle for each piece of equipment allows for significant reductions in operational cost. Leveraging 3rd party hardware replacement support after initial 3 years, building in replacement services during a decommissioning project to maximize human resource onsite, and having in place proper reporting of assets to know what is deployed and what is decommissioned.

  5. Reverse Logistics: Pre-plan a reverse logistics service when replacing old equipment with new. This includes the install of new equipment, de-installation, return, repair, and/or disposal of technology products, to help retailers reduce waste and improve their bottom line.
