How the Product Lifecycle Timeline Affects TPM

Updated: Jul 18

With Third Party Maintenance, timing is everything.  Let’s take a look at how the product lifecycle affects support options.  When are you better off with the OEM and when is TPM a valuable alternative?

IT Product Lifecycle

0 – 3 Years

In the initial phase of the product life cycle, TPM providers face challenges due to the dominance of OEMs.  Most equipment is new, making replacement parts harder to obtain.  As a result, organizations often stick with OEM support, leading to higher costs for maintenance.

3 – 6 Years

By this stage, the availability of spare parts improves, and TPM providers become more familiar with the technology. While equipment remains functional, OEM support can be costly for the value offered. This is the ideal time to consider TPM as a cost-effective alternative, providing tailored support and flexibility for IT asset management.

6 – 9 Years

After year six, most OEMs deem equipment near the end of its life cycle, leading to discontinued support or high service fees.  At this stage, TPM providers offer a cost-effective alternative, easily sourcing parts from the second-hand market instead of pushing for new device purchases.

9 Years – Beyond

By this stage, equipment may still function, but breakdowns will likely increase and become unpredictable.  TPM remains accessible, even for devices over ten years old, however spare parts may be harder to find.  At this point, your team should start planning for asset retirement and refresh.  Work with a trusted partner to explore the best options for your company moving forward.
