@Cisco Systems was founded in 1984 by a couple, Leonard Bosack and Sandra Lerner. The two met while studying at Stanford University and went on to work in two different University departments following graduation. Bosack found a way to link the two department networks together utilizing technology Stanford devised in the 1970's.
Taking the name from San Francisco, the couple started their business after gaining licensing rights of the software from Stanford.
While their time with Cisco was short lived after gaining VC investment from @Sequoia Capital, Cisco has gone on to be one of the largest and most successful technology hardware providers in the world.
