Basic Data Center Power Design

Keeping this High Level


Here is a quick rundown of data center power design and displays how majority of businesses have their power infrastructure designed. For simplicity's sake, we are just illustrating the flow of Utility power.

In the below diagram we show power entering through a transformer outside the Data center, in through to an Automatic Transfer Switch.

From the ATS, we patch into the Main Distribution Panel which passes power through the Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) out to the Power Distribution Units (PDU) residing at the ends of each row of cabinets.


Each piece of equipment is critical in the process of transferring clean critical power from utility in to your cabinet. In the next post, we will explain the function of each piece of equipment and discuss the design of typical backup power.
